Back when the film was going to be a direct adaption of Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Burt Reynolds and Paul Newman were considered for the lead role named Joseph Leland (who would eventually become John McClane). Eastwood was even interested in directing and starring in the film at one point, but backed out to make Scommessa con la morte (1988).
