Sean Penn was not originally interested in doing this film. He had had an overloaded work schedule for several years prior, including an Oscar win for Mystic River, and he wanted to spend time with his then-wife, Robin Wright, and his family. Director Sydney Pollack eventually convinced him to take the job. This may be the reason that he looks so tired at times throughout the film. However, his fatigue may simply be a character choice on his part.
