While Kimberly Peirce was proud of her work on the film, she was disappointed that the studio interference compromised her original vision for the film. Her intention was to make a more faithful adaptation of the novel and not try to imitate the 1976 version; however, studio executives forced her to excise 40 minutes of footage and reshoot several scenes in order to make the film a true remake of the 1976 version.
