The film contains a number of subtle references to the "Back to the Future" film series, which was also produced by Universal. In the first classroom scene, Mr. Thorn is writing rules on the blackboard, and at the bottom it says, "No Slackers." Mr. Thorn is played by James Tolkan, who played Mr. Strickland in the "Back to the Future" series, and was fond of calling both Marty and his father slackers. One of the other rules is "No Tardies". Strickland gave Marty his fourth tardy slip in a row in his first appearance in the first film. One of the large stone cats that adorned the Hill Valley clock tower is quite visible when Ben follows Annie out of the auditorium. Also, some then-commercially available toy miniatures of the De Lorean, and the 2015 police car and taxi cab can be seen in Junior's roach motel.
