William Holden's character, Major Lincoln Bond, is a fighter pilot who had been shot down in the Korean War and spent the rest of the war as a Prisoner of War (POW); the aftereffects of the torture he endured while a POW are a major element in this film. Two years earlier, in I ponti di Toko Ri (1954) Holden's character, LT Harry Brubaker, is a Korean War fighter pilot who is shot down and then killed by Communist ground troops. However, the real-life fighter pilot on whom the character of Brubaker was based turned out to have been actually captured alive and spent the rest of the war as a POW.
