Throughout the movie only Kate interacts with Tom because she is the only one that can see him. His reflection can also not be seen throughout the movie (the side of the bus, shop windows). Tom and his coat are also not seen by the two workmen when Kate is getting changed in the street and he is supposed to be hiding her; she comments that he is not doing a good job, and the audience later understands why.
