Eli Wallach's role as Calvera was not the counterpart to Toshirô Mifune's role as Kikuchiyo in "Seven Samurai", as Kikuchiyo was more parallel to Bernardo O'Reilly, played by Charles Bronson, as both anguished over not being of a higher class and just peasant farmers. In Seven Samurai, Eli Wallach's role was played by Shinpei Takagi as the bandit leader, but Wallach's role had vastly more depth. Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune would go on to act together in a "Samurai/Western", titled "Red Sun" loosely based on the true incident of when Japan sent a delegation of Samurai in 1860 to tour the United States and eventually meet with then President James Buchanan.
