The movie ending and the novella ending are drastically different, though Dussander dies in both. The novella ends with Todd murdering Mr. French after being confronted by him, then going up on an overpass to begin shooting people in cars going by, until the police kill him. In the movie, Todd essentially gets away with everything, coercing Mr. French with threats of false accusations instead. Bryan Singer opted to use this ending, and later turned to Stephen King, citing that he didn't think he could do justice to the novella's ending.
