Columbia Pictures tried to persuade director David Fincher to tone down the R rated violence and language to attract wider audiences but Fincher refused and the film kept its R rating upon release. Despite the restricted rating the film went on to become one of the highest grossing films at the box office for the careers of Fincher and star Jodie Foster.
