There are a few scenes where Becca times herself holding her breath in the bathtub. This scene is very similar to the scene in 'Mermaids' (1990) when Christina Ricci does the same thing. The main characters even have a conversation at the dinner table where they discuss how Becca might be part mermaid and will be growing a tail soon. Christina Ricci, Cher, and Winona Ryder have a very similar conversation in Mermaids.
