Celebrating the film's 30th anniversary at the TCM Film Festival in 2019, screenwriter Robert Harling revealed that Ouiser originally had no response in the scene where M'Lynn invites her to come to the guidance center for mental help. During rehearsals, the actress playing Ouiser asked Harling why the meanest woman in the entire town wouldn't have a ready retort in this particular instance. To placate her, Harling tossed off the line, "I'm not crazy. I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years." To his surprise, when the actress said the line during the live performance, it got the biggest laugh of the entire play. He was so perplexed at the response that the next night he told the actresses to recreate their performances in exact detail for that scene, in an attempt to observe exactly what had been done to garner such a reaction. The actresses did so meticulously, and when the line brought the house down again Harling was forced to conclude that it was a much funnier bit of dialogue than he had realized, even as its creator.
