Sam Raimi was in contention to direct, but was ultimately overlooked as he was not a big enough name. His name was brought up again as potential replacement for Tim Burton on Batman Forever (1995), but was overlooked again in favor of Joel Schumacher. He ended up directing Sony's Spider-Man movies.
