Robert Eggers knew from the start that the film had to be in black and white, even if that meant it would scare off potential financiers. Even before he began writing the script, he wrote on the front page: "This film must be photographed on black & white 35mm negative, Aspect ratio: 1.19:1, Audio mix: Mono." In the end, he lost around $6 million in investments from that decision, more than half the film's eventual budget.
