The film's press kit said of the filming location of Woomera in outback South Australia: "The land here is one of the most ancient on earth. Once, vast inland oceans spread to the horizon, but now, all that is left is the salt, deep, hard, and white, so brilliant that it hurts the eyes to look at it. The surrounding country is low and barren, adding to the surreal quality of the place. Then, in the midst of it all, man-made structures: concrete bunkers and buildings, obviously long-abandoned and weathered by time. These are the remnants of the Anglo-Australian rocket test program of the 1950s, at the height of Britain's power as a nuclear force, and the depths of the Cold War. If any place was made-to-order for a film like 'Zone 39', then this must surely be it."
