The Japanese confidence in their codes led them to change the codes less frequently than they should have. Not only did the partial decryption of their codes lead to the American victory at Midway in June of 1942, but it alerted the Americans to an inspection itinerary of Admiral Yamamoto the following year, resulting in his plane being shot down in April of 1943. When Yamamoto's remains were found he was strapped into his seat, tilted back against a tree and with his hand firmly clenched around his samurai sword.
