A third Ghostbusters (Acchiappafantasmi) (1984) film was stuck in development for decades. During the negotiation process for Ghostbusters II (Acchiappafantasmi II) (1989), a deal was struck that gave Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman incredible veto power: no third film could be made without the approval of all four (even if one of them declined to be involved), and Reitman had to be offered the chance to direct. Murray was the largest holdout, with his reluctance to engage (documented in the Sony email leaks) resulting in several drafts being written, only to end up stuck in development. In 2009, all four lead actors reunited for the video game, Ghostbusters (2009), which takes place two years after the events of Ghostbusters II (Acchiappafantasmi II) (1989), and was considered at the time to be an equivalent to a third movie. After Harold Ramis's death in early 2014, Reitman officially announced that he would let someone else direct a third movie. Sony courted several major comedy filmmakers, including Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and Judd Apatow, but all declined, intimidated by the idea of trying to top the original movie. During this process, the studio also offered the film to Paul Feig, who rejected the project for the same reason. When then-Sony Motion Pictures Chairperson Amy Pascal asked him what it would take to get him to commit to the project, Feig considered the question overnight, and then came back with the idea for the reboot the next day.
