During WWII this film was banned in Japan. The Imperial government feared that if Japanese audiences saw that Americans were capable of creating such beautiful works of art, then the nation would be demoralized. The Imperial ministry of the Japanese navy secretly violated the ban and showed this film to Mitsuo Seo, an artist who had previously directed several animated shorts films. The goal was to produce an animated film on par with Fantasia to touch the young public and arousing a patriotic sentiment.
