According to Noel Baker in his memoir Hard Core Roadshow: A Screenwriter's Diary, British-Canadian actor Julian Richings was the only actor during the initial casting session who "got it". Baker was impressed that Richings was able to recite the character Bucky Haight's lengthy monologue upon the first take without once tripping up or needing to re-read the script during filming. The Bucky Haight character became one of Richings's best-known roles, which he reprises in the later films Trigger and Hard Core Logo 2. An in-joke reference was made to Bucky Haight in the 2000's romantic comedy Jack and Jill vs. the World, where Richings plays an aging punk rocker going by the moniker "Mr. Smith" who performed in a short-lived band called "Postal Partum", where he was caught biting the tails off of live kittens.
