John Connor getting turned into a particle-based T-3000 Terminator by Skynet, and then time-traveling to an alternate future to ensure Skynet's creation there, seems to combine a few unused ideas for previous Terminator installments. In the re-written original ending of the previous movie Terminator Salvation (2009), John Connor is killed battling the T-800. To keep the Resistance fighting, his skin gets transplanted onto Marcus Wright's Terminator endoskeleton, to make people think John Connor is still alive; however, Skynet then hacks into Marcus, and controls him to wipe out the Resistance. In an early draft for Terminator 3 - Le macchine ribelli (2003), John Connor was a successful computer programmer who ends up being instrumental in the activation of Skynet; the evil Terminator was a shapeshifter that could take on a gaseous energy form.
