Shashi Kapoor first offered the film to Sridevi. She never wanted to do the film due to her role being nothing compared Amitabh's role. Rather than saying a direct no to Shashi, she led him on a chase for months. Finally Shashi had enough and signed Dimple. Shashi then bashed Sridevi in a video magazine explaining how he had to chase Sridevi to get a direct answer. A year later Shashi and Sridevi patched up. Shashi decided after Ajooba he was going a East Africa safari film with Amitabh and Sridevi. Sridevi agreed verbally to do the film. After Ajooba flopped, all plans for Shashi to direct again were dropped.
