Ron Dean later appeared in Il cavaliere oscuro (2008). Both films won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, for Tommy Lee Jones and Heath Ledger. Both of their characters were based on characters inspired by Victor Hugo. Gerard was based on Inspector Javert from Les Misérables, the Joker on Gwynplaine from The Man Who Laughs (1928), the silent film adaptation of Hugo's novel of the same name.
