When Bromhead is hunting, the animal he tries and fails to shoot is a leopard. This is not a food animal, as the meat is not delectable. He was behaving as an officer, merely hunting for sport. This underscores the character's upbringing as being more auspicious than that of his engineering counterpart, Chard. His presumptuous nature overlooks the fact that both he and Chard were quite old to still be lieutenants and therefore perhaps not among the best of the best.
