During the awards ceremony on the ship's deck (about 70 minutes in), an African-American sailor is shown from behind receiving a medal. This would be Doris Miller, a cook on the West Virginia who shot down several Japanese planes at Pearl Harbor in spite of having no training with anti-aircraft guns, and who received the Navy Cross for his actions. Miller was killed in November, 1943 when the aircraft carrier he was serving on, the USS Liscome Bay, was hit by a torpedo fired from a Japanese submarine. Many believe Miller should have received the Medal of Honor. However, the Navy has decided to name CVN-81, an aircraft carrier that began construction in 2021, after him. When it's christened it will be USS Doris Miller.
