After being disappointed with the way his material had been treated by producers in Underworld (1985) (which included a scene in which needles burst out of a character's skull), Clive Barker wrote The Hellbound Heart as his first step in directing a film by himself. Since he had little experience with feature films, he went to the library to find books about directing, but the two titles that were there just happened to be both checked out at the same time.
