Due to the difference in societal values and a change of laws in the following decades, smoking could no longer be depicted on the school grounds in this film; furthermore, Ms. Desjardin would not have been able to slap Chris Hargensen and still keep her job. The filmmakers compensated for this by having her simply slam Chris against a locker.
