Bloodbending, which is introduced in season 3 with guest character Hama, was originally written to be more brutal. The idea was that any characters that were bloodbent would show visible pain and agony to the technique, but Nickelodeon asked the writers to tone down the bloodbending, as the idea was considered too horrific for a children's show.
