A TV commercial seen by E.T. is about long-distance phone calls. At the time, the Bell System's monopoly on telephone systems had recently been broken up, creating a large number of regional "baby Bells" and compelled AT&T / Bell to lease its long-distance lines to a variety of new providers. Consumers found themselves with separate local and long distance providers. There was a fierce competition between long distance providers, with literally dozens of competing TV commercials appearing every evening.
