40% of the sequel was shot along with the first film. Kamal completed the film within few months of release of the first. Kamal who produced the films after pledging his house for a loan, went bankrupt due to delayed tamil release and flooding of illegal Hindi prints. He recovered his losses by the end of theatrical run due to the audience who were adamant to not use illegal prints, making it the second highest grossing tamil language film of all time behind "Enthiran (2010)". Kamal was in talks to sell the film to Aascar Films Pvt Ltd for an undisclosed amount. Aascar Ravichandran who was simultaneously involved in multiple productions incurred loss due to most of his films ended up box office bombs, especially the high budget film "I"(2015). Kamal, in the meanwhile entered into multiple projects including "Uttama Villain" and "Thoongavanam" both scripted by him, latter being a remake of French film "Sleepless Night (2011"). Release of Vishwaroopam 2 got delayed indefinitely as Aascar Ravichandran couldn't pay the entire amount to Kamal. Seeing an opportunity, Kamal shot his army sequence and a song composed by Ghibran with a new crew of Shamdat Sainusdeen as cinematographer and Vijay Shankar as editor. Lyca Productions who were on a production spree in Indian film industry during the time, planned to buy shelved projects and distribute them, including Vishwaroopam 2. Finally in 2018, Kamal was paid the remaining remuneration of 10 crores by Aascar and film was released.
