After the Arizona is bombed, Lt Pierce tells Billy "If you go in that water you will die." While this may have been true in some areas where the burning oil was, several people were actually blown off the repair ship Vestal moored next to the Arizona by the force of the explosion and managed to survive. One of these was the Vestal's captain Cassin Young, who climbed back aboard his ship and managed to get it underway, eventually beaching it due to the damage it had incurred. Young received the Medal of Honor for his actions. He was later killed in the Battle of Guadalcanal while skipper of the heavy cruiser USS San Francisco, receiving the Navy Cross for those actions.
