According to writer Simon Kinberg, the plot was inspired from the X-Men storylines "The Dark Phoenix Saga" (the appearance of the Phoenix) and "Gifted" (the development of a "cure" for the mutant gene, sparking controversy and conflict amongst mutants and humans). The "Phoenix" story represented the main emotional theme of the movie, and the "Gifted" story would be the political subplot.
