The book What's Eating Gilbert Grape, the source material that inspired the film, had Gilbert's age set at 24. The film is a bit more ambiguous; while it states Ellen's age as 15 and Arnie's as 18, Gilbert looks like an older teen but is also having an affair with a grown woman, leaving his age more or less unclear.
