This movie takes place from 2002 to 2003, the time when Greta Gerwig graduated from St. Francis Catholic High School in her hometown of Sacramento, California. Gerwig wanted to avoid making a contemporary movie, as she didn't feel confident to tell a story revolving around teenagers who are obsessed with their smart phones.
