During the scene where Betty convinces Rita to help her rehearse her audition, Betty says to her, "Come on. It'll be just like in the movies. We'll pretend to be someone else." This statement foreshadowed that the first and second acts of the film were an extended dream of Diane Selwyn. Diane's dream shows that she's trying to cope with her failed acting career and love life by escaping into a fantasy world and pretending to be another person through Betty Elms.
