Jeff Bridges' and co-star Richard Jaeckel had competed in 1972 for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar: Bridges in his film debut for "The Last Picture Show" and Jaeckel for "Sometimes a Great Notion". The winner that year for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar ended up being Bridges' co-star in "The Last Picture Show" Ben Johnson, who incidentally co-starred with Jaeckel in "Chisum" (1970) with John Wayne. Johnson appeared in eight films with John Wayne and Jaeckel had previously co-starred with Wayne in "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949) . Some twenty five years after "Starman", Bridges would end up taking over the role of Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" (2010) which he landed his sixth Oscar nomination for. Wayne had won the Oscar for playing Cogburn in original "True Grit" (1969).
