Six years after this film was released, Orion Pictures released the flop film 'Mac and Me' (1988), which was widely ridiculed as both a 'terrible film' and an 'Inferior E.T. rip-off'. When Steven Spielberg was asked a few years later why neither he or Universal Studios had taken any legal action over the obvious script similarities to E.T. he simply replied that the film was so bad "I didn't want to be responsible for making people curious to watch it".
