According to William Shatner in Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special (1991), potential directors included Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. They were all unavailable. Spielberg was busy directing 1941 - Allarme a Hollywood (1979), Coppola was busy directing Apocalypse Now (1979) and Lucas was in pre-production on L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980).
