After the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. in 2001 a State Department employee, Kathy Kriger, who'd been stationed in Casablanca, left her post. She wanted to make a symbolic stand for tolerance by investing in a Muslim country. She purchased an old mansion and converted it into Rick's Café. It became a magnet for tourists and locals. She was known as "Madame Rick." She was known to circulate through the "gin joint" and insert bits of dialog from the movie.
