The scene where Neil Armstrong finally opens up to Edward H. White II about missing his late daughter, Karen, is more dark than depicted in the film. Armstrong says about the swing, "...the Walkers had one just like it." That is a reference to Joe Walker, another X-15 pilot who was killed in a flight accident shortly beforehand. So in this scene Armstrong references one dead test pilot while remembering his dead daughter, and the man he is talking to is another test pilot who is about to die.
