Matthew Fox, who has a brief role as the parajumper who brings Gerry Lane and his family to safety, was originally a supporting character with a much bigger role. In the original storyline that was later re-written and re-shot, Gerry Lane ends up in Russia, where his cell phone is taken away and he is forced to help fighting the zombies. In the meanwhile, Gerry's wife Karin and their kids have been put in a refugee camp in the Everglades, where people have to pay for goods. When Gerry is finally able to contact Karin after a long absence, it becomes clear that she has reluctantly started an affair with the parajumper, in order to keep herself and her children safe. The parajumper then contacts Gerry, warning him to stay where he is. The movie would have ended with Lane making his way through Russia and boarding a ship to the USA, together with Segen and Simon, an English-speaking companion. Gerry then attacks the coast of Oregon with a team, hell-bent on getting his wife back, thus setting up the paratrooper as a (human) villain for a sequel. Due to the constant re-writes, re-shoots and editing, his role in the final cut was reduced down to only 5 lines of dialogue.
