AMPAS wanted to submit Peter Sellers in the Best Actor category even though James Mason is nominally the lead actor. Producer James B. Harris lobbied for him to go in the Supporting Actor category but to no avail. The Academy stood firm on this, given the prominence of Sellers' name in the marketing of the film.
