The film makes use of the "purloined letter" motif (i.e., a much-sought after object is hidden in plain sight, but its obvious location obfuscates or sublimates its presence to the subject), albeit with a twist: In this case, three rare and most valuable stamps pose for regular stamps in a letter. Arguably, it is the obvious, every-day nature of the stamped letter that precludes the thieves from learning the actual value of the stamps. The motif is named after the eponymous story by Edgar Allan Poe and is a matter of analysis in several major works on psychoanalysis, most notably by Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan.
