The earliest press item on ''These Old Broads'' - in December 1999 - mentioned along with Shirley MacLaine and Debbie Reynolds not Joan Collins but rather Lauren Bacall. Bacall, who despite lacking the conventional song-and-dance credentials of MacLaine and Reynolds had parlayed her singular vocal stylings into Tonys for the musicals ''Applause'' and ''Woman of the Year'', would apparently remain attached to the project as late as July 2000, about two weeks before the announcement of a September shoot start date with Collins stepping in. ''These Old Broads'' was Bacall's second preempted opportunity to co-star with Elizabeth Taylor: in the TV movie Malice in Wonderland (1985) Jane Alexander rather than Bacall played Hedda Hopper to Taylor's Lauren Bacall, due to Bacall's high salary demands.
