Aside from the major reveal at the end that she is Mater Suspiriorum, the character of Suzy Bannion is greatly expanded upon in this film in comparison of Jessica Harper's depiction of her in the original film by Dario Argento. In this film, Suzy is a rebellious girl from a Mennonite farming community in rural Ohio and seems to have some knowledge of witchcraft and the goings on in the Markos Academy before arriving. In the original, Suzy is from New York and appears to have a more cosmopolitan upbringing with her Aunt, who is a friend of Madame Blanc's.
