The Nautilus, SS-168, was a key element in the victory at Midway, despite the unreliability of her Mark XIV torpedoes, as seen. By causing a destroyer to remain for a depth charge attack, this resulted in the delay that allowed the ship to be spotted by McClusky, leading his squadron to the rest of the fleet. Nautilus made multiple attempts that day and, as was often the case, without sinking any targets. She continued to operate throughout the war and sank a great many ships as well as landing commando raids and rescuing civilians, with her 13th war patrol taking place in January, 1945. Due to years of wartime damage, which included friendly fire shelling, she was retired shortly after, sailing to Philadelphia for decommissioning the following June.It will be noticed that the boat is shown with a strange port at the bow just below the deck. She had been fitted with external torpedo tubes, two fore and two aft, as well as external storage of additional torpedoes under the platform and in the superstructure.
