Gloria Swanson was originally cast as Memnet, but she left because she was having trouble getting a backer for a musical stage version of "Sunset Blvd" - based on the film Viale del tramonto (1950) in which Cecil B. DeMille played himself. The musical was abandoned in the early 1960s, even after a cast album was recorded during out-of-town tryouts.
