The film continues the Lawrence d'Arabia (1962) theme in connection to David's character that was explored in Prometheus (2012). In the flashback at the start of the film, Peter Weyland tells David that he is perfect, as he poses the ultimate question of where humanity, and by extension David, came from. David responds, noting that Weyland will die but that he would not. This gives David a sense of ego, which is immediately punished by Weyland by making him do a menial task like pouring tea. Nevertheless, David realizes a purpose which is to discover the beginning of things, and a desire to outdo his human creators. Many years later, as seen in Prometheus, David watches a video of Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia; a film that focuses on Lawrence's ego and his belief that he can do anything. Noting his physical resemblance to O'Toole, he grooms himself while staring into a mirror. In Alien Covenant, David sings "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" during a scene of transformation. This is a nod to Lawrence marveling at the echoes of his own voice as he sings this same song after wandering for many days by himself in the desert. As Lawrence is singing this, he suddenly makes contact with a British officer, who guides him to the camp of King Faisal. It highlights David's prolonged isolation. It should be noted that as Lawrence's success expands and his following increases, he becomes more bloodthirsty, finally reaching the point of ordering a "no prisoners" attack on the retreating Turks.
