The bookstore across from Arthur Geiger's book shop, in which Marlowe visits and flirts with its proprietress, is called Acme Book Shop. At the time it was a fairly popular term, which means "the best". It was a popular generic name for fictional businesses in both film and Warner Bros./Looney Tunes cartoons. The latter is arguably most famous in the Roadrunner, the business often run by his nemesis, Wile E. Coyote, with all kinds of real as well as impossible weapons, tools and devices. It is also a popular generic name for any fictional company.
