Marie Antoinette reportedly disliked the formality of court life in the Palace of Versailles. She personally owned the chateau Petit Trianon, frequently retreating there to get some privacy or to socialize with her inner circle of friends and favorites. By formal rule, nobody was allowed to enter the Petit Trianon without either an express permission or a personal invitation by the Queen.
