Sir Kenneth Branagh and Sir Derek Jacobi played the role of Hamlet on film and stage, as well as directing each other in their interpretations of the famous Shakespeare tragedy. Branagh appeared in Jacobi's stage production in 1988 (with the Renaissance Theatre Company), and then went to star and direct in the 1996 big screen adaptation of the play, with Jacobi appearing as King Claudius. Jacobi played Hamlet in 1979 for a stage production that toured Europe and Australasia, and later reprised the role in a television adaptation aired by the BBC in 1980. Coincidentally, Paapa Essiedu (an extra who appears as a police officer guarding the Wailing Wall at the start of the movie) also played the role of Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 2016. The two actors appeared in Enrico V (1989), L'altro delitto (1991), and Hamlet (1996). Branagh also directed Jacobi in Cenerentola (2015).
