By chance or divine favor, only a few survivors came out of extermination camps. These camps were situated along the prewar frontier between Germany and Poland. This frontier marked the boundary of another type: the German railways and the Russian railways. Barbara Tuchmann in The Guns of August explained both railroads were deliberately incompatible due to the gauge. (The French designed the Russian railways during Nicolas II reign.)
